Chatham Bars Inn

gold club resort

First, we head to historic Cape Cod, known as one of New England’s world class beach vacation destinations. About an hour by car from Boston, is Chatham, MA, a charming town originally incorporated in 1712. Aside from incredible marine adventures Chatham offers, the quaint Main Street is known for chic boutiques, white steepled churches and intriguing art galleries. A visit to the busy commercial fishing pier reveals the thriving fishing village that exists beneath Chatham’s stylish façade. To step back in time to the grand oceanfront resort of days past, Chatham Bars Inn, is the place. Having first opened in 1914, but since, restored to its original grandeur, with the latest amenities, Chatham Bars Inn sits on 25 acres of beautifully landscaped grounds and private beaches, with several boats for sailing, sportfishing or a day trip to Nantucket Island. The property’s 217 guest rooms and cottages range from rooms at the Main Inn to oceanview cottages. The room types and styles vary in look, but all include the top notch finishes and comfort one would expect from an old-world summer resort. Chatham Bars Inn, has an on-property farm that produces well over 100,000 pounds and 125 varieties of vegetables. It also features innovative farming techniques, such as hydroponics and Slovenian beekeeping. Make time to see Chatham Lighthouse, one of the most scenic lighthouses on the East Coast, or stroll Chatham Fish Pier, especially in the morning hours when you'll spot fishing boats unloading the days catch. Additionally, the Inn offers complimentary, daily boat shuttle service to the Cape Cod National Seashore’s North Beach Island, as well as, marine activities like lobstering, fishing, sailing adventures, whale watching and private charters to Nantucket or Martha’s Vineyard. For an authentic culinary outing, let WIT plan your own beachfront Lobster & Clambakes, for the quintessential New England experience. Whether you choose golf, tennis, fishing, cooking classes or simply beaching out, Chatham Bars Inn, will deliver with style.

The Wequassett Resort and Golf Club

firepit and pool area

Still in charming Chatham, is Cape Cod's only Forbes Five-Star resort, The Wequassett Resort and Golf Club. Wequassett, the Wampanoag Indian word for “crescent on the water”, is reflected in the resort’s layout of over 23 acres, comprised of twenty buildings scattered around the waterfront, overlooking Pleasant Bay and the Atlantic Ocean. The 121 rooms and suites, are designed to blend in with Cape Cod architecture, that is both charming and sophisticated. All accommodations have a deck, balcony or patio, for taking in the stunning waterfront views, with your morning coffee or evening glass of wine. We love that Wequassett also offers villas and a private cottage for groups or family travel. The list of daily activities and adventures is endless. For the golfer, the most enticing of them, is that the neighboring Cape Cod National Golf Club, which allows play for resort guests, is one of the most prestigious clubs in the nation. Tennis enthusiasts will appreciate Wequassett’s four all-weather plexi-pave regulation courts. Daily drill clinics are offered, and the resident pro is available for private lessons. Wequassett recently completed an extensive renovation of their pool area to include private cabanas. An elevated Brazilian wood boardwalk wraps around the pool area with a 270-degree sweeping view of Round Cove, not to mention endless water sports, boating, Olympic sized lap pool and a children’s club. A private kayak tour of the Monomoy River aka “Muddy Creek”, would make for a perfect afternoon, and if you’d like to leave the resort for some local shopping or site seeing, there is a complimentary shuttle service to the nearby towns of Chatham, Orleans, Harwich and Brewster. Wequassett offers four dining options on property. Hailed as "Cape Cod’s premier dining destination, for both the cuisine and 180-degree view of Pleasant Bay,” and awarded Four Star, Four Diamonds, the widely acclaimed, Twenty-Eight Atlantic, is all about fresh takes on New England fare. Try the tableside petit clambake with an emulsified butter poached lobster, bliss potatoes and asparagus, for a truly upscale version of a Cape Cod beach classic.

Next we are off to Newport, Rhode Island, about 1.5 hours from the Cape. What Chatham is to cozy beach cottages, Newport is to stunning Gilded Age mansions. People flock to Newport to see the mansions, where the Vanderbilts, the Astors, and the Morgans, lived more than a century ago. Also known for hosting the Newport Jazz Festival, cobblestone streets, a cool upscale downtown area, and a thriving waterfront, Newport has so much happening on any given day, it’s the perfect shore vacation spot. When visiting places like Cliff Walk or the International Tennis Hall of Fame, you'll notice that most people are walking or riding bikes as their primary mode of transportation- so charming to pedal around town like a local! We love a trip to Fort Adams, deactivated in 1950, the Fort is a National Historic Landmark and was named for President John Adams. It was actually active during the War of 1812. It’s a great place to spend the day, and is home to many fun attractions, like President Eisenhower's summer White House (Eisenhower House), the Museum of Yachting, Sail Newport Sailing Center and USS Bennington Memorial. For all you history buffs, we can plan a Fort excursion complete with private tours, fishing, luxe picnics, kite flying and some of the most scenic views of Narragansett Bay and Newport Bridge. The Fort is also home to both the Newport Folk Festival, and the world-famous Newport Jazz Festival.

Vanderbilt

Starting our tour in town, the Vanderbilt, Auberge Resorts Collection, is a historic boutique hotel, just minutes from the waterfront area, and is one of the town’s best kept secrets. Originally built by Alfred Gwynne Vanderbilt, the 1909 property is a vintage Newport mansion that has been restored to its former glory. It is one of the few private homes of the era to operate for guests as a fully functioning hotel. Today, the mansion offers 33 stylishly appointed rooms and luxury suites, whose features will make any of the Vanderbilts feel right at home.  The multi-purpose rooftop deck is ideal for morning vinyasa and integrated yoga flow classes, over sunrise views of the Bay. In the evening, it is the best spot to sip your favorite adult beverage, as the sun sets over the harbor.

The Chanler

old cottage home with landscaping

Newport's captivating 3.5-mile Cliff Walk is the perfect place for panoramic ocean views, crashing waves and a one-way hike that borders the back lawn of The Breakers, among the other famous Newport mansions. Located along the Cliff Walk, is The Chanler at Cliff Walk, a luxury hotel set among the gilded jewels, Newport is famous for. The 20 rooms and suites are classic and distinguished, with different styles taken from Newport’s rich history. The manicured gardens, ocean views and timeless décor, all add up to serenity in a timeless setting that bring you back to polished silver and upscale refinement. Boasting beautiful views of the Atlantic Ocean, as well as an open kitchen featuring a custom-crafted French Bonnet cooking, Cara restaurant is a must, when in Newport. Translating to "dear one" in Italian and "friend" in Gaelic, executive Chef Jacob Jasinski has curated a modern interpretation of fine dining utilizing the freshest and best ingredients from the Atlantic Ocean and farms from the New England region.

Ocean House

yellow ocean house

About an hour up the coast is Watch Hill, Rhode Island, where the historic Ocean House is located. This, completely restored resort, recalls the Golden Age of hospitality and living. This beachfront property has the feel of a boutique hotel with the perks of an expansive resort. Each of the Ocean Houses’ 49 guestrooms and 20 suites, is inspired by the oceanfront views with luxurious, yet comfortable décor. For a true New England experience, rent one of the Ocean Houses’ 6 cottages that provide unparalleled privacy, and are ideal for families and groups. They range in size from two-bedroom bungalows to a seven-bedroom grand home. All cottages have a dedicated concierge to handle the details, and guests have full access to all the resorts’ amenities and happenings. The Ocean House is located on a 1,000-foot stretch of private, white-sand beach, complete with beach cabanas and all the water sports and ocean activities one could wish for, to include sea kayaks and surfboards. The Ocean House also has entertaining activities like a culinary education program, championship croquet with an in-house pro, wellness programs, and daily sunset harbor cruises. We love the resorts Oh!Spa, the only Forbes Five-Star spa in Rhode Island, and among only 56 destination spas in the world to achieve the Five-Star rating. Consider trying one of the many local and organic treatments, like the Detox Marine Mud Wrap- 60 minutes that will improve circulation and detoxify the body while restoring vitality and tone to the skin. It’s like a blissful float in the ocean that leaves you glowing! After your massage, try one of the 5 restaurants on-property, offering a variety of cuisine, from fine dining to casual, all inspired by farm-to-table cuisine of the Atlantic Northeast.
